Adventures in Bad Sentences
“Maher, a proud atheist who supports legalizing pot, same-sex marriage and is a board member for PETA, upset a number of conservatives, according to Entertainment Weekly.” —Bill Maher Takes Heat Over Tim Tebow Tweet
Note the equation, probably unintentional, of Maher’s positions on marijuana, gay marriage, and ethical treatment of animals, with atheism; the implication is that believing in gay marriage is on the same ideological plane as not believing in God. I think the point is to underscore Maher’s riling of conservatives, but even in this reading the inclusion of the other positions is mystifying. Presumably, Maher’s tweet would have outraged Tebow supporters regardless of any of his other views.
This is, however, how legitimate views become radicalized: the more support of gay marriage is paired with atheism, the more it seems like just another position of the godless sodomites rather than a completely rational response to a civil rights issue.
