Apparently I have two reviews in this month’s Bookslut. This one is on Why the Child is Cooking in the Polenta by Aglaja Veteranyi, a Romanian circus performer who wrote only one novel before committing suicide. Both books courtesy Dalkey Archive Press, which is awesome.
“Napoleon began the war with Russia because he could not help going to Dresden, being dazzled by the homage paid to him there, putting on a Polish uniform, yielding to the stimulating influence of a June morning, and giving way to an outburst of fury.” That’s a hell of an opening line for a novel. Too bad it’s on page 778.
